Guitar Neck
Guitar Neck
There is a great many physical components that make up a guitar. Some, such as strings and fingerboards, are obvious. Others, such as walnuts, are less evident but still are visible. However, some components of the guitar you can not see at all, because they are hidden inside the instrument. This is the case with armor rod, an metal bar that runs along the inside of the neck of a guitar. This part of the guitar has existed since at least early 1900, although it was not patented until 1921. Despite the fact a reinforcing bar is not visible, it is still an essential part of a guitar, one that can add quality and longevity of an instrument.
Ideally, the guitar neck should have a slight relief, or bow. This form allows reasonably low action (more on that later) at positions of high pitch while allowing the strings to ring clearly in the lower positions. A Truss Rod that is essential for maintaining optimal relief. As mentioned, the truss rod runs along the inside neck of the guitar. Each bar has a mechanism that allows the rod to be loosened (moved towards the body of the guitar) or tight (a bit off higher on the guitar neck). The position of the bar can do to compensate for changes in the neck relief. Such changes can be caused by several factors: changes in humidity, aging of the wood in the neck or the extra stress on the strings of the guitar. It is this last factor that most often creates the need for the mast.
Reinforcing bars are not on acoustic guitars because they are not necessary. Nylon Strings of these instruments do not require high voltage, which means that the necks of the instruments are not overly stressed. Steel ropes, on the other hand, require much higher voltage. Because the tension is so high, in fact, can cause neck of the guitar that will not deform over a period of time, sometimes to a point beyond repair. A reinforcing bar helps to counteract this effect for the strengthening and straightening the neck.
The hardening of a truss rod also affect the tuning of the guitar. When the bar is tight, straighten the neck, which makes the Guitar Strings closer to the fingerboard. By contrast, when the bar is released, the neck is tilted forward and the strings move further. The distance from the strings of the fingerboard affects the way it operates the instrument, or the "action", and this is a factor in the sound of an instrument.
When a reinforcing bar is the "double action" variety, which means the bar can be both tightened and loosened. Not all bars go both ways: they may be more stringent, but standard truss rods can only be loosened to a certain extent, because in most of cases, the guitars neck need to be straightened out rather than allowed to turn. With a Dual Action truss rod, both tightening and loosening are possible, which means the neck can be done to bend either forward or backward.
