What are the effects of painting my guitar and what kind of paint is best?
Now I know that with hollow / semi-Hollow Body guitars and noise can change the tonal qualities (for better or for worse) to paint and / or lacquer. However, I intend to paint the back of the neck and head securities of a Solid Body guitar (http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Squier-Standard-Stratocaster-with-Tortoise-Shell-Pickguard?sku=512732) Black. I want to assure the painting of these parts does not affect any of the guitar's tonal properties. Now, secondly, I'm not sure what the best paint to use. I've heard many people say "airbrush is, but I'm on a tight budget ($ 30 or less). So what kind of spray paint (acrylic, metal, enamel, etc.) should be used for the same type of protective lacquer or sealer? Also, (this is not so important) I can paint the keys to fit the bridge, vibrato, and Jack gold Metal Cap with a new change in tone? Thank you very much for any help!
Aerosol lacquer in very thin layers is probably your best bet. While you can change the tone ever so slightly, it will be barely perceptible. The reason people say it is better is because the paint airbrushing is so thin. I recommend call your local guitar repair or seller. A small company specializing in the restoration of instruments and repairs or construction of usual will be well versed in all aspects of both mechanical and sound, and of course people love to mod. I give some advice based on what I know about instruments and painting, but it's better to give a quick call to a professional.
