Act Discovery

A month ago, Columbus Day 2006 hit hard in Western New York historical storm, the likes of which has not been seen in 100 years. Trees, still in full leaf, called the sharp fall of snow, and morning were bent, broken and had downed utility lines that affect more than 380,000 homes. The power was for days and people had to live as in past days. During that time my family made some shocking discoveries.

1. We need food, clothing and shelter, but we really like heat and running water. Gathered around the wood stove (thank God I tell my husband Paul Bunyun play in our wooded lot), the family plays games and unrealistic to expect the power going. It was a long wait - five days to be exact.

2. There is a reason for some rhymes, above all, "If it's yellow, let it smooth. If it's brown, flush the toilet." Being in the well water pump needs no running water and juice was a little hard to digest for us, the people of the 21st century. I learned that urine is sterile and has even been used to clean wounds when water is not available. (It gives new meaning to the cleaning of a wound.) Not least, the sound of a working toilet is now music to our ears.

3. We like each other. Who knows? There were board games by candlelight, tales, preparing meals, and talking to each other - a real novelty. No one blew a fuse, I heard less negativity, and this time the family connections should be improved everywhere.

4. We need each other. We left the TV show "Survivor", where the mentality every man for himself. Survival mode brought out the best of us. Camp grill was not on holiday but we were lucky to have that. Food stocks I have in the basement "Fallout Shelter", which annoyed me to serve duel purpose: to feed us and as a useful reminder that once again, I was right. After four days, our family finally got the power so we could go and clean. So we are always nice to relatives - the need!

5. There is no life without the Internet! I had not had space in our space, and it was very cozy, with seven of us around the wood stove. I have to admit that adults did not find Internet as difficult as children. However, Google said it could not be anything for checking the accuracy that was its advantages. (See number 6.)

6. We do not like complaining. A mini battery-operated radio was our only link with the outside world. Most people were large and acknowledged that the government may not prohibit the accidents, acts of nature, over time, aging and gravity, but ... I told my children about the results of a study I'd read just before the electricity was cut he showed in 99% of cases of complaining, sitting at the large end perspective, drastically.
